19September2017|Volume21,Issue3GetMobile[STANDARDS]XuyuWangandShiwenMaoAuburnUniversityMichelleX.GongGoogleInc.Editors:MichelleX.GongandShiwenMaoANOVERVIEWOF3GPPCELLULARVEHICLE-TO-EVERYTHINGSTANDARDSiththegrowthofmobiledataanddevices,cellularnetworkshavegreatpotentialtosupportvariousvehicularcommunicationservicesforsafetyandnon-safetyapplications.Thispaperpresentsanoverviewofthe3GPPcellularvehicle-to-everything(V2X)standards.WediscussvariousaspectsofV2Xstandards,includingtypesofV2Xapplicationsupportin3GPP,requirementstosupporteV2Xscenarios,differentlevelsofautomation,comparisonofV2XandIEEE802.11p,architecture,spectrumusage,andsecurityandprivacyforV2Xservices.Finally,weconcludethisarticlewithareviewoftypicalV2Xapplications.Withthefastdevelopmentofmetropolitanareas,cityroadsandhighwayshavefacedmanyserioussocio-economicproblemsbecauseofvehicularcrashesandcongestions.Forexample,theWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)reports1.25millionroadtrafficdeathsgloballyin2013;trafficjamsalsocauseatremendouswasteoftimeandfuel,whichallleadtohugeeconomiclosses[1][14].However,mostsuchproblemscanbemitigatedbyprovidingtimelyinformationtodriversand/orvehicles.Vehicularcommunicationsandnetworkingarebecomingimportantresearchareasforimprovingvehicularsafetyandoptimizingtrafficflow,toenablemoreefficientuseoftransportationresources,andtoensurehighqualityofuserexperiences.Twomainvehicularcommunicationstandardsuiteshavebeendevelopedinrecentyearstoenableinformationexchangesbetweenvehicles,includingthededicatedshort-rangecommunications(DSRC)standardsintheUS[12]andtheintelligenttransportationsystem(ITS)-G5standardsdevelopedbytheEuropeanTelecommunicationsStandardsInstitute(ETSI)[13].BothstandardsuitesarebasedonIEEE802.11pforvehicularnetworks(VANETs).However,ithasbeenrecognizedthatvehicularcommunicationsbasedonIEEE802.11phaveseverallimitationswhensupportingmobilityandquality-of-service(QoS)provisioning[13].Alternatively,thefastcommercializationofcellularsystems,suchasLong-TermEvolution(LTE),hasmadethemus...
