JOralMaxillofacSurg65:630-634,2007TheEffectsofHemostaticAgentsonPeripheralNerveFunction:AnExperimentalStudyAlperAlkan,DDS,PhD,*SametI˙nal,DDS,†MehmetYildirim,PhD,‡BurcuBas¸,DDS,§andErdalAg˘ar,PhD�Purpose:Inthepracticeoforalandmaxillofacialsurgery,hemostaticagentsaresometimesplacedincloseproximitytoperipheralnerves.Inthepresentstudy,weevaluatedimmediateanddelayedeffectsof4hemostaticagents(oxidizedregeneratedcellulose,5%colloidsilver-addedgelatinesponge,bovinecollagen,bonewax)onperipheralnervefunction.MaterialsandMethods:Atotalof25ratsciaticnerveswereprepared,andtheamplitudeswererecordedwithaphysiologicaldataacquisitionsystem.Animalswererandomlyassignedto5groups:control,oxidizedregeneratedcellulose,gelatinesponge,bonewax,andbovinecollagen.Thefirsthourrecordsaredefinedasimmediateeffectsofthesehemostaticagentsonnervefunction.Theanimalswerethenallowedtorecoverfor4weeks.Attheendofthisperiod,thesamesurgicalandrecordingprocedureswereperformed.Thesefinalrecordsaredefinedasdelayedeffectsofhemostaticagentsonnervefunction.Accordingtonerveconductionvelocity(NCV)andcompoundactionpotential(CAP)valuesoftheexperimentalgroups,earlyanddelayedeffectsofeachhemostaticagentwerestatisticallycomparedwithBonferronicorrectedtest(P�.05).Results:Statistically,NCVwassignificantlyreduced,andtheCAPwassignificantlyincreased1houraftersurgery(P�.05)inthegroupofoxidizedregeneratedcellulose.However,therewerenosignificantdifferencesafter4weekscomparedwiththefirstrecords.Inthegelatinespongegroup,CAPwassignificantlyincreased4weeksaftertheapplication.Inthebovinecollagenandbonewaxgroups,NCVandCAPvalues(1hourand4weeksaftertheapplication)werenotstatisticallysignificantcomparedwithinitialcontrolrecords.Conclusion:Thepresentstudyshowsthatbovinecollagenisthemostsuitablehemostaticagentapplicableforperipheralnerves.©2007AmericanAssociationofOralandMaxillofacialSurgeonsJOralMaxillofacSurg65:630-634,2007Inthepracticeoforalandmaxillofacialsurgery,he-mostaticagentsaresometimesplacedincloseprox-imitytoperi...
