CACANCERJCLIN2019;69:7–347VOLUME69|NUMBER1|JANUARY/FEBRUARY2019Abstract:Eachyear,theAmericanCancerSocietyestimatesthenumbersofnewcancercasesanddeathsthatwilloccurintheUnitedStatesandcompilesthemostrecentdataoncancerincidence,mortality,andsurvival.Incidencedata,availablethrough2015,werecollectedbytheSurveillance,Epidemiology,andEndResultsProgram;theNationalProgramofCancerRegistries;andtheNorthAmericanAssociationofCentralCancerRegistries.Mortalitydata,availablethrough2016,werecollectedbytheNationalCenterforHealthStatistics.In2019,1,762,450newcancercasesand606,880cancerdeathsareprojectedtooccurintheUnitedStates.Overthepastdecadeofdata,thecancerincidencerate(2006-2015)wasstableinwomenanddeclinedbyapproximately2%peryearinmen,whereasthecancerdeathrate(2007-2016)declinedannuallyby1.4%and1.8%,respectively.Theoverallcancerdeathratedroppedcontinuouslyfrom1991to2016byatotalof27%,translatingintoapproximately2,629,200fewercancerdeathsthanwouldhavebeenexpectedifdeathrateshadremainedattheirpeak.Althoughtheracialgapincan-cermortalityisslowlynarrowing,socioeconomicinequalitiesarewidening,withthemostnotablegapsforthemostpreventablecancers.Forexample,comparedwiththemostaffluentcounties,mortalityratesinthepoorestcountieswere2-foldhigherforcervicalcancerand40%higherformalelungandlivercancersduring2012-2016.Somestatesarehometoboththewealthiestandthepoorestcounties,suggestingtheopportunityformoreequitabledisseminationofeffectivecancerprevention,earlydetection,andtreatmentstrategies.Abroaderapplicationofex-istingcancercontrolknowledgewithanemphasisondisadvantagedgroupswouldundoubtedlyaccelerateprogressagainstcancer.CACancerJClin2019;69:7-34.©2019AmericanCancerSociety.Keywords:cancercases,cancerstatistics,deathrates,incidence,mortalityIntroductionCancerisamajorpublichealthproblemworldwideandisthesecondleadingcauseofdeathintheUnitedStates.Inthisarticle,weprovidetheestimatednumbersofnewcancercasesanddeathsin2019intheUnitedStatesnationallyandforeachstate,aswellasacomprehensiveoverviewofca...
