ORIGINALARTICLESourcerockpotentialassessmentoftheHuaiHinLatFormation,SapPhluBasin,NakhonRatchasimaProvince,northeasternThailandBoonnarongArsairai1•QinglaiFeng2•ChongpanChonglakmani1•SakchaiGlumglomjit1Received:19April2022/Revised:31August2022/Accepted:9September2022/Publishedonline:29September2022©TheAuthor(s),underexclusivelicencetoSciencePressandInstituteofGeochemistry,CASandSpringer-VerlagGmbHGermany,partofSpringerNature2022AbstractTheHuaiHinLatFormationhasahigh-potentialresource,andtheBanNongSaipartwasresearchedandsampled.Toachievethisgoal,petrographicanalysis(kerogentypes),geochemicalanalysis(totalorganiccarboncontent,TOC),vitrinitereflectance(Ro),andRock–Eval(RE)pyrolysiswerecarriedoutinthisstudy.Accordingtothefindings,typesII,III,andIVwereidentifiedusingamodifiedVan-Krevelendiagrambecausethehighermaturesourcerockshowinghydrogenindex(HI)andoxygenindex(OI)arecontinuouslydepletedandraised.However,microscopicobservationdescribesmaceralsasprimarilysapropelicamorphinite,therefore,typeIisimportant.TheTOCwasdeterminedtobebetween1.90%and7.06%,whichisconsideredverygoodtoexcellent.Theoriginaltotalorganiccarbon(TOCo)wasdecidedtouseitsmaceralcomponentstodeterminehowtoconvertextremelymatureTOCtoTOCo.Itvariesbetween5.13%and10.74%andreachesamaximumof57.21%whichiscomparabletoTOC.At0.82%–1.04%,443–451°C,0.50%–38.10%,and69.00%–99.59%arethevitrinitereflectance(Ro),maxi-mumtemperature(Tmax),productionindex(PI),andtransformationratio(TR),respectively.Latepeakmaturityreferstoamixtureofoilandgas,whereasmostTRratiosrefertothemaingasphase.Similarly,thepetroleumresidualshowsnoindicationofgastrappedatavolumeof6309.50mcf/ac-ft.Insummary,sourcerockpotentialwasassessedwithinasuitableriskrangedefinedbyTmax(445.70°C),Ro(0.91%),TR(90.63%),TOC(8.15%),shalethickness(46m),andkerogentype(typeI).KeywordsTOC·Shalegas·Maturity·Geochemistry·Kerogentype·Pyrolysis1IntroductionThailand’senergydemandshavebeenincreasingsteadilythroughoutthedevelopmentera.Theresponsiblegovern-mentsector...
