Designation:F 595 01Standard Test Methods forVacuum Cleaner HoseDurability and Reliability(All-Plastic Hose)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F 595;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the effectof anticipated stresses and strains that vacuum cleaner hoseswill receive in normal use.1.2 These test methods apply to all-plastic,nonelectricvacuum cleaner hoses for household use.NOTE1For information on plastic wire-reinforced,nonelectricvacuum cleaner hoses for household use, refer to Test Method F 450.1.3 These test methods are individual tests as agreed uponbetween the hose manufacturer and the vacuum cleaner manu-facturer.1.4 The following tests are included:SectionTorsional flex6Hot and cold flex with aging(optional)7Abrasion(external surface)(optional)8Flex9Pull test on hose fittings with aging10Crush111.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathmaticalconversions to SI units, which are provided for informationonly and are not considered standard.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 638 Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics2D 695 Test Method for Compressive Properties of to Terminology F 395.4.Significance and Use4.1 These test methods can be used by buyers of vacuumcleaner hose to specify the test criteria the hose must meet tobe acceptable for their purposes.5.Sampling5.1 The sample size shall be one that is mutually agreedupon between the hose manufacturer and the vacuum cleanermanufacturer.TEST METHODS6.Torsional Flex6.1 ScopeThis test method covers the determination ofresistance to failure while twisting under stress in a bend.6.2 ApparatusThe apparatus shown in Fig.1 is suitablefor this test method with the following provisions:6.2.1 Means to rotate test mandrels in an inverted verticalposition at 30 6 2 rpm,one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise operating at identical rates.6.2.2 Suitable clamp to attach both ends of sample hose tomandrels without causing failure at the clamp during the test.6.2.3 Test mandrel with diameter same as inside diameter ofhose with a 0.078-in.(2.0-mm)radius at the ends of themandrel(see Fig.1).6.2.4 Instrument to measure cycles to failure or to a speci-fied end point.6.3 Test SpecimenThe specimen shall be a length of hose30 6 1 in.(762 6 25 mm)long without fittings.6.4 ConditioningCondition the specimen at 68 to 81F(20 to 27C)ambient temperature for not less than 1 h prior tothe test.6.5 Procedure:6.5.1 Conduct the tests at 68 to 81F(20 to 27C).1These methods are under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F11 on VacuumCleaners, and are the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F11.30.02 on Durability/Reliability Essential Components.Current edition approved shown in Fig.1.6.5.3 Set the measuring instrument at zero or record initialreading.6.5.4 Test the specimen by rotating at 30 6 2 rpm untilfailure or to a specified end point.6.5.5 Failure may be evidenced by a broken reinforcingwire, tear,or hole that penetrates the hose jacket,or a collapsedcoil or ply for a lined-type hose,or any combination thereof.6.6 ReportThe report shall include the following:6.6.1 Number of cycles to failure or to a specified end point, whichever occurs first,6.6.2 Type of failure,6.6.3 Ambient temperature,6.6.4 Description of specimen,and6.6.5 Number of specimens tested.7.Hot and Cold Flex with Aging(Optional)7.1 ScopeThis test method covers the determination ofthe effect of temperature and flexing upon a hose sample.7.2 Apparatus:7.2.1 Air-Circulating Oven or Environmental Chamber, tomaintain 156F(69C)controlled to 62F(61C).7.2.2 Cold Box,able to maintain 20F(6.7C)controlledto 61F(60.5C).7.3 Test SpecimenThe specimen shall be a length of hosein which the length in inches or millimetres shall be determinedas follows:11.2 3
