F1625;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers child carriers that mount to therear of bicycles in order to transport children or accessory loadswith a maximum weight of 18 kg(40 lb).This specificationdoes not apply to child carriers that mount in front of thehandlebars,or to the top tube,head tube,or behind thehandlebars in front of the rider.NOTE1In the instructions,the manufacturer must warn the rider thata load added to the bicycle will lessen the stability and alter the ridingcharacteristics of the bicycle.This complication is particularly importantwhen riding with children who are near the high end of the weight range.1.2 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to thetest method portions,Sections 5,6,and 7,of this specification:This standard does not purport to address all of the safetyconcerns,if any,associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety,health,and environmental practices and determine the appli-cability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.3 This international standard was developed in Coatings43.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 bicycle child carriera seating device,the shape ofwhich is adapted to the seated position of a child and mountsto the rear of the bicycle,which keeps the child in acomfortable position during the ride.4.Requirements4.1 GeneralChild carriers shall be designed and manufac-tured in such a way that components with which the child orrider come into contact do not cause injuries during normaluse,or when used in accordance with the manufacturersinstructions.Surfaces must be free from burrs,sharp edges,andpoints;if such are present they must be covered by protectivecoverings.No openings with which the childs hands can comein contact shall have dimensions larger than 6 mm(0.236 in.)but also smaller than 13 mm(0.512 in.),that is,holes withdimensions between 0.236 and 0.512 in.(6 and 13 mm)areforbidden.Child carriers must be equipped with a rear reflector.The manufacturer must warn the rider that a load added to thebicycle will lessen the stability and alter the riding character-istics of the bicycle.4.2 Structure:4.2.1 AssemblyWhen assembled in accordance with theinstructions provided by the manufacturer,the seat componentsmust be
