designation A1005/A1005M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers double submerged-arc welded,black,plain end steel pipe for use in the conveyance of fluidsunder pressure.Pipe in sizes NPS 16 and larger,as given inASME B36.10,are included;pipe having other dimensions,inthis size range,are permitted,provided such pipe complieswith all other requirements of this specification.1.2 It is intended that pipe be capable of being welded in thefield when welding procedures in accordance with the require-ments of the applicable pipeline construction code are used.1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or in SIunits are to be regarded separately as standard.The values ineach system are not exact equivalents,therefore,each system isto be used independently of the other,without combiningvalues in any way.1.4 The following precautionary statement pertains to thetest method portion,Section 14 of this specification:Thisstandard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is the responsibility of the userof this standard to establish appropriate Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 double submerged-arc welding,na welding processthat produces coalescence of metals by heating them with anarc of arcs between a bare metal electrode or electrodes and thework pieces,using at least one pass from the inside and at leastone pass from the outside to make the longitudinal,helical,andskelp end weld seams,whichever are applicable,the arc or arcsand the molten metal are shielded by a blanket of granular,fusible material on the work pieces.3.1.2 jointer,nnot more than three lengths of pipe circum-ferentially welded together to produce a single length thatcomplies with the length provisions of this specification.3.1.3 skelp,nthe flat rolled product intended to be formedinto pipe.3.1.4 skelp end,nthe weld joining the ends of two lengthsof skelp.3.1.5 specified outside diameter,nthe outside diametershown in ASME B36.10 or that stated on the order.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee A01 on Steel,Stainless
