Designation:D 2164 83(Reapproved 2000)Standard Methods of TestingStructural Insulating Roof Deck1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2164;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThe test methods presented herein relating to structural properties were developed to measure theresistance of insulating roof deck to forces expected or possible when the product is used as roofdecking, usually in exposed beam construction.Insulating roof deck is a laminated composite of interior and weather-resistant grades of insulatingboard where the interior,factory-finished board provides the finished ceiling and the glued-laminatedcomposite provides the structural deck, the base for built-up or other roofing and the thermalinsulation.Vapor barriers are provided where use conditions require. While these test methods weredeveloped specifically for measuring the deflection and strength characteristics of roof deck ofinsulating board, the concept is based on loads and forces applicable to any structural deck.Resultsof test are presented in terms usually used by architects and structural engineers.Presented here are methods of test only. The criteria to be applied to the results of test are a matterthat must be considered when these methods are used to determine limiting values for a procurementspecification or for any purpose.A case in point is the accelerated aging exposure detailed in Sections25 and 29.That exposure cycling was developed many years ago to obtain a measure of the resistanceof a material to deterioration under exterior exposure conditions. It was selected for inclusion in thiscompilation of structural test methods for insulating roof deck, fully realizing that roof deck usuallywould not be subjected to a combination of exposures as severe as for materials exposed directly tothe elements. It was the considered opinion, however, that the procedure would ensure adequateperformance of insulating roof deck in use.The methods presented herein are only for structural properties. For physical properties such asthermal conductivity and vapor permeability, which are important to the use of these materials, theappropriate ASTM methods for determining those properties of any engineering material arereferenced and should be used.Instructions are included in these methods for specimen preparationand presentation of the results.1.Scope1.1 These methods cover determination of the followingproperties of structural insulating roof deck.In all structuraltests the specimens are loaded as beams with the finished(ceiling)face in tension.SectionsEquivalent Uniform Load8-12Concentrated Load13-16Sustained Uniform Load(Sag)18-20Impact Load21-24Resistance to Cyclic Exposure25-29Thermal unitsmay be approximate.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:1These methods are under the jurisdiction of with bendingstrength and deflection criteria found in applicable buildingcodes. This standard establishes procedures for determining theload-carrying properties of such panels under uniform,concen-trated,and impact load;and for evaluating durabilities.3.2 The test procedures outlined consider the effects oflong-and short-term load applications on roof deck samples. The procedures outlined parallel similar ASTM procedures fortraditional decking systems.Test results are appropriate for thedetermination of conformance to establish criteria. This stan-dard does not establish or identify performance requirements.4.Descriptions of Terms Specific to This Stan
