Designation:D213602(Reapproved 2012)Standard Test Method forCoated FabricsLow-Temperature Bend Test1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2136;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 Fabrics coated with rubber or rubber-like materialsdisplay increased stiffening when exposed to decreasing am-bient temperatures. This test method describes a simple pass/fail procedure whereby material flexibility at a specified lowtemperature can be determined.Failure is indicative of unac-ceptability of the coated fabric for use at that temperature.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.For specificprecautionary statement see 8.1.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D751 Test Methods for Coated Fabrics2.2 ASTM Adjuncts:Bending Fixture Drawings33.Summary of Test Method3.1 Specimens cut from the coated fabric are conditioned ata selected low temperature for a specified duration.Whileremaining exposed at that temperature, they are then individu-ally placed in a bending apparatus and bent through a specifiedangle.Failure of the coated fabric is indicated by fracture of thespecimen or the appearance of surface cracks in the coating.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method evaluates the ability of coated fabricsto withstand a prescribed bend at an established low tempera-ture.Fabrics coated with polymeric materials are used in manyapplications requiring low temperature flexing.Data obtainedusing this test method may be used to predict in-use behavioronly in applications in which the conditions of deformation aresimilar to those specified in this test method. This test methodhas been found useful for specification purposes but does notnecessarily indicate the lowest temperature at which thematerial may be used.5.Apparatus5.1 Low-Temperature ChamberThe chamber in which thetest specimens are exposed to low temperature shall besufficient in size to contain the bending fixture used for testingthe specimens and to permit the operation of the fixture to bendthe specimens without removal from the chamber. The cham-ber shall also have sufficient work space to permit the condi-tioning of test specimens in accordance with Section 8 of thistest method. It shall be capable of maintaining a uniformatmosphere of cold dry air or any suitable gas at specifiedtemperatures within a tolerance of 61C(61.8F).5.2 Bending Fixture3The basic requirements for the de-vice used for bending the test specimens are shown in Fig.1and Fig.2.Dimensions and mass shall conform to Fig.2.5.3 Glass PlatesA sufficient number of glass plates ap-proximately 125 by 175 mm(5 by 7 in.)shall be used whenconditioning all test specimens. All test specimens shall beplaced between glass plates during the exposure period toeliminate any curling or bending. The thickness of the glassplates shall be of such size as to permit ease of handling.5.4 GlovesA pair of gloves shall be required for handlingtest specimens within the low-temperature chamber.5.5 LubricationA suitable low-temperature grease, ifneeded, should be applied to the trigger release and hinge pinof the bending apparatus to prevent stiffening during theconditioning period.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D11 on Rubberand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D11.10 on Physical Testing.Current edition approved Dec.1,2012.Published February 2013.Originallyapproved in 1962.Last previous edition approved in 2007 as D2136 preparation shall be takenfrom roll ends at a frequency agreed upon between thepurchaser and the supplier.7.Test Specimens7.1 The test specimens shall be 25 6 1 mm(1 6 0.04 in.)wide and 100 6 2 mm(4 6 0.08 in.)long.They shall be cutwith the longer dimension parallel to the lengthwise direction
