Designation:D239215Standard Test Method forColor of Dyed Aviation Gasolines1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2392;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope*1.1 This test method covers the determination of the accept-ability of color of dyed aviation gasolines.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.For specificwarning statements, see Annex A1.2.Summary of Test Method2.1 The hue and color intensity of a sample of the gasolineto be tested are compared with those of glass permanent-colorstandards.3.Significance and Use3.1 Aviation gasolines are dyed different colors for easyidentification of grade, thus minimizing possibilities for fuelingaircraft with fuel of the wrong grade.4.Apparatus4.1 Color Comparator,split-field,for viewing simultane-ously(by transmitted light)the sample to be tested and thecombination of the reference liquid and the glass permanent-color standard.4.2 Fluid Tubes,of glass,200 mm viewing depth, with afused-on plane bottom plate.4.3 Plungers,Fluid Type,of polished optical glass.4.4 Aviation Gasoline Color Standards,2permanent-colorglass disks.5.Material5.1 The reference liquid can be either distilled water or asample of the gasoline to be tested before the addition of dyeor lead alkyl fluid.(WarningGasoline is extremely flam-mable.See A1.1 and A1.2.)6.Procedure6.1 Clean the optical surfaces of the color comparator.Insertthe empty fluid tubes in the comparator and adjust the positionof the light source until the intensities of the light from bothhalves of the comparator split-field are equal.6.2 Rinse and fill one of the tubes with the reference liquidto be used and insert the plunger.Wipe all excess referenceliquid from the outside of the tube and from the top of theplunger, and insert the tube on the left side of the comparator.6.3 Rinse and fill the other tube with the sample to be tested, and insert the plunger.Wipe all excess sample from the outsideof the tube and from the top of the plunger, and insert the tubein the right side of the comparator,so that it is directly belowthe larger of the two openings when the access door is closed.6.4 Insert the glass permanent-color standards into thecomparator and rotate the standards until the color section canbe viewed by transmitted light.Turn on the light source andcompare the two fields for hue and intensity with the minimumand maximum color sections of the glass permanent-colorstandards.6.5 Determine if the hue is approximately the same as thestandard and if the intensity of the color is between, orequivalent to,the minimum and maximum,in which case thecolor of the sample is acceptable. If the hue is different fromthe standard or if the intensity lies outside the minimum andmaximum color sections, report the test as a fail.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 onPetroleum Products,Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D02.05 on Properties of Fuels,Petroleum Coke and Carbon Material.Current edition approved April 1,2015.Published May 2015.Originallyapproved in 1965.Last previous edition approved in 2011 as D2392 96(2011).DOI:10.1520/D2392-15.2The sole source of supply of the apparatus known to the committee at this timeis Tintometer Ltd,Solar Way,Solstice Park,Salisbury,United Kingdom,SP47SZ.If you are aware of alternative suppliers, please provide this information to ASTMInternational Headquarters.Your comments will receive careful consideration at ameeting of the responsible technical committee,1which you may attend.*A Summary of Changes section appears at the end of this standardCopyright ASTM pass-fail data no generallyaccepted method for determining precision is currently avail-able.8.2 BiasNo justifiable statement can be made on the biasin this test method for determining the acceptability of thecolor of dyed aviation gasoline because it is a pass-fail test.9.Keywords9.1 aviation gasoline;color;dyed aviation gasoline;gaso-lineANNEX(Mandatory Information)A1.WARNING
