Designation:D513217Standard Test Method forHorizontal Burning Rate of Polymeric Materials Used inOccupant Compartments of Motor Vehicles1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5132;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method is intended for use as a small-scalelaboratory procedure for comparing the relative horizontalburning rates of polymeric materials used in occupant com-partments of motor vehicles.1.2 During the course of combustion, gases or vapors, orboth, are evolved that are potentially hazardous to personnel.Adequate precautions shall be taken to protect the operator.1.3 UnitsThe values stated in SI units are to be regardedas standard.1.4 This test method,Federal Safety Standard MVSS 302,SAE J369,and ISO 3795 address the same subject matter, butdiffer in technical content.1.5 This standard is used to measure and describe theresponse of materials, products,or assemblies to heat andflame under controlled conditions, but does not by itselfincorporate all factors required for fire hazards or fire riskassessment of materials, products,or assemblies under actualfire conditions.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.Specific hazardstatements are given in Section 7.1.7 Fire testing is inherently hazardous.Adequate safe-guards for personnel and property shall be employed inconducting these tests.NOTE1There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard.1.8 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D5025 Specification for Laboratory Burner Used for Small-Scale Burning Tests on Plastic MaterialsE176 inthis test method, refer to Terminology E176.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 This test method employs a standard test specimen(100by 356 mm)with a thickness up to 13 mm,mounted in aU-shaped metal frame. The specimen is ignited by means of a38 mm high flame from an appropriate burner, and the burningrate of the material is determined.4.2 The rate of burning is determined by measurements ofthe horizontal distance burned in relation to the time ofburning, and reported for each set of specimens.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D20 on Plasticsand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D20.30 on Thermal Properties.Current edition approved May 1,2017.Published June 2017.Originallyapproved in 1990.Last previous edition approved in 2011 as D5132
