Designation:D730721Standard Practice forSampling of Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Materials1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D7307;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers the proper field sampling of ther-moplastic pavement marking materials to ensure test results arerepresentative of the material being tested.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 thermoplastic pavement marking material, nahighly filled 100%total solids highway marking material thatwhen heated to a molten state can be extruded or sprayed ontoa road surface and when cooled forms a solid,durabledelineator.4.Summary of Practice4.1 A random selection of three bags of thermoplasticpavement marking material is made from a manufactured lot.Using one of the three size reduction methods outlined in thisprocedure a small, representative sample of the manufacturedlot is obtained. This sample may then be used for the testing ofthe chemical and physical properties of the marking material.5.Significance and Use5.1 It is important to obtain a truly representative sample ofthe thermoplastic pavement marking material prior to perform-ing any tests. This can be difficult due to the wide ranges ofsizes, shapes, and densities of the individual components thatare used in the manufacture of these types of materials.Thesample that is obtained using this guide should be representa-tive of the manufactured lot from which it was obtained andcan be used for the testing of the chemical and physicalproperties of the material as required by the governing speci-fication.6.Apparatus(See Note 1)6.1 Quartering Method:6.1.1 1.2 by 1.2 m(4 by 4 ft)Section of Cardboard,SmoothPlywood,or Metal.6.1.2 Metal Scooping Pan.6.1.3 Metal Splitting Practice D2013.7.Hazards7.1 Consult the material safety data sheet for the materialbeing tested and follow the recommendations for the handling1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM
