looking out the window of the apartment at the city streets below.Cars rushed by,and he could hear horns blaring and sirens soundingit was so different from his small hometown in Mexico.Moving to a new homea whole new country!was incredibly exciting.Fernandos enthusiasm quickly subsided when he turned to see his grandfather sitting motionless at the dining room table, staring down at his hands.Abuelo had barely spoken all day.Conscious of his grandfathers sad mood,Fernando spoke gently:“Dont you think its wonderful here,Abuelo?”Abuelo shrugged.“Quizs,”he said.“For you,Fernando, and for your mama and papa, maybe it is wonderful. For me I am not so sure.”Abuelo continued with sorrow in his voice.“I miss my home and the rest of our family and all my friends very much.”Fernandos mother had been listening from the kitchen doorway, and she came over and put her hand on Abuelos shoulder.“Were so glad you decided to come here with us.I know its hard, but well all get used to our new home thought about all the ways that Abuelo had helped him over the yearsteaching him to swim under the hot summer sun when he was only five, walking him to the first day of school every year, teaching him to make his famous(at least in their town)guacamole.Fernando wished he had a way to pay Abuelo back for all his kindness.“Fernando!Venga.Come;can you help me,please?”Fernandos father called.Fernando ran to find Papa.He was happy to help him carry empty packing cartons to the basementhe couldnt wait to explore more of the building!Within a few days of moving in,Fernando had begun to feel at home in the building. He enjoyed chatting with the neighbors. He had been surprised to find that there were many older people living alone;in his hometown, grandparents, parents, and children often lived together in the same house.Coming around a corner in the hallway one day,he came across Ms.Monroe struggling to carry several grocery bags from the elevator.“May I help with those?”he offered, rushing over.“That would be wonderful, dear,”she answered, handing him two bags.Fernando followed her into her apartment and set the bags on the kitchen table.3Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 on a chair in the living room.“Do you play the violin?”he asked.“Not very much anymore.I used to play with a string quartet, but now its mostly just decoration,”Ms.Monroe replied with a laugh.“My grandfather plays the guitar,”he told her,“but he doesnt play very much anymore either.”She nodded in understanding.“Its hard to find the motivation when youre not part of a group. At least,it is for me.”Fernando replied thoughtfully,“I think Abuelo feels that way,too.”4Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 OPDFVendor:Learning MediaLevel:60001_009_CR14_LR_G6_U3W1L60_O_118649.indd reminded Fernando of Abuelo.Though there wasnt much of a physical resemblance, the mans dark eyes were thoughtful and wise like Abuelos.Fernando paused in the hallway as the man removed his keys from his pocket and stopped in front of an apartment a few doors away.“Hi,Im Fernando,”he said politely.“My family and I are new to this building.”The man shook Fernandos offered hand and introduced himself as Manfred.“So,do you like living here?”Fernando questioned him.“Its okay,”Manfred responded, sounding slightly downhearted,“but I havent been here long.”Fernando thought about Abuelo, homesick for Mexico.“What do you miss from your last home?”he asked.Manfred paused before answering carefully,“One thing I particularly miss is the senior center.”“Whats that?”Fernando asked.“It is a place with support services for senior citizens,”Manfred explained,“and classes and social events. Its a shame that there isnt one nearby. But never mind about that.”He didnt wait for a reply;he just said good-bye and went into his apartment.Fernando stood staring at the closed door for a moment and then, deep in thought, climbed the stairs to his own apartment.5Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 past his grandfather and burst into the kitchen, where he found his parents.“I met another of our neighbors,”he told them and then repeated what Manfred had said about the senior center.“Wouldnt it be great if there were something like that around here?It would give Abuelo somewhere to go to have fun and make friends like the ones he had in Mexico,”he said.“Definitely,”Mama agreed.“And if they offered English lessons, that would give him the opportunity to improve his language skills. That would make his new life much easier and more enjoyable.”Though Fernandos school in Mexico had given English classes and Mama and Papa both spoke English,Abuelo didnt know it quite as well.Fernando knew this was one of the reasons that he was finding it hard to adjust to their new surroundings.“Fernando,I like your idea of a local senior center,”Papa said.“Lets talk further about how we would get it off the ground.”“Maybe I dont want to go to any center for senior citizens!”Abuelo hollered grumpily from the other room.Mama shook her head as if to say,“Lets leave it at that for now,”so nothing more was said. But Fernando had only just begun thinking about the senior center idea.6Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 OPDFVendor:Learning MediaLevel:60001_009_CR14_LR_G6_U3W1L60_O_118649.indd 6001_009_CR14_LR_G6_U3W1L60_O_118649.indd 615/02/12 3:39 PM15/02/12 3:39 PMThat Friday night,Fernando and his family went to their first rooftop party in their new building. The rooftop was a hive of activity, with the residents smiling and waving as they bustled around to catch up with friends.Mama had worked hard to convince Abuelo to come.“Ill take some of my tamales to share.Maybe you and Fernando can make your special guacamole?”she had asked. He had complained about not having the right Mexican ingredients, but in the end, theyd both had a good time mixing the guacamole and dipping tortilla chips for a taste.Mama and Papa took their food over to the already laden table while Abuelo hovered by the doorway and Fernando stayed beside him, looking around.“Theres Manfred!”Fernando exclaimed. He pulled Abuelo by the arm over to where Manfred was standing.“Hi,Manfred,”Fernando said.“Id like you to meet my grandfather.”“Hola,”Manfred said to Abuelo.“Cmo est usted?”“Muy bien, gracias,”Abuelo said, smiling as he shook Manfreds hand.Fernando grinned in surprise. He hadnt realized that Manfred spoke Spanish.Perhaps his instinct was right, and the two men would become friends!Soon the two men were happily chatting away in Spanish,so Fernando ducked away to check out the rest of the party.er ve One,Too!We Des er ve One,Too!WWe eDDCha pter 2Cha pter 27Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 OPDFVendor:Learning was a fantastic opportunity to gather peoples thoughts on the idea of a local senior center. He began by asking Ms.Monroe and the group of neighbors who were chatting together.“Oh,senior centers are wonderful,”Ms.Monroe said.“It would be convenient to have one close by,but whos going to do all the hard work and raise all that money to open one?Im not sure its realistic.”Disappointed,Fernando thanked them for their time and moved on.A short time later,he noticed that Papa was gesturing to him.“Fernando,I dont want you to feel as if your idea is falling on fallow ground,”Papa stressed.“It sounds like people are interested;they just dont know how to move things forward.”Fernando agreed.“Papa,Im like you.You didnt give up on finding a job and bringing us to America.Im not going to give up on my idea either.”“I just remembered,”Papa said,“that on my way to work,I passed a senior center across town. How about if I stop by this week and see what I can find out for you?”“Great,Papa!”Fernando exclaimed.“Please find out all you can.”Papa put his arm around Fernandos shoulders.“Ill do my best,”he promised.9Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 OPDFVendor:Learning living room visiting with Abuelo. It was very reassuring to see them laughing and talking.Mama invited Manfred to stay for a meal, and over dinner,Papa informed them all about his visit to the senior center near his office.“The people were a fount of information,”Papa began.“They told me exactly how that center was created, how its organized, and what support services they offer.”Filled with enthusiasm,Fernando asked his father numerous questions and was enthralled with everything he revealed.“It all sounds great!”he enthused when Papa had finished.“Im positive that our neighbors would really enjoy a center like that.”Manfred shook his head, smiling.“I am amazed at your insight into the people in this building,Fernando.I think its about time we gave you a hand to make sure this senior center really happens.”“S,lets all do it!”Abuelo agreed.A grin spread across Fernandos faceit was wonderful to see his grandfather looking happy and animated again.10Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 us,”Manfred announced.“I am sure youll be very impressed when you hear what he has to say.”After handing out copies of a summary Mama had typed with the information they had gathered about setting up a center,Fernando hesitantly began to speak.Soon everyone was contributing ideas about what the center could offer, and the room buzzed with energy and excitement.“Id like computer classes so I can learn to email my grandchildren,”one woman stated.Another added,“Itd be great if there were music practice rooms.Id like to play my trombone, but its very noisy.I dont think the rest of you would like it!”“And Id like somewhere to practice on my violin,”Ms.Monroe said. Then Abuelo stood up.Fernando could tell that he was very nervous,so he gave him an encouraging smile.“I would like to learn better English,”Abuelo said and then quickly sat back down, obviously embarrassed. But it soon became clear that there was no reason for him to be timid about his idea;a Japanese man quickly agreed and so did a woman from Turkey.11Program:CR 14Component:LRG6 U3 W1 OPDFVendor:Learning MediaLevel:60010_016_CR14_LR_G6_U3W1L60_O_118649.indd 11010_016_CR14_LR_G6_U3W1L60_O_118649.indd 1115/02/12 3:42 PM15/02/12 sitting outside the supermarket telling everyone who passed by how great a local senior center woul
