1PROMOTINGCHOICE•SECURINGSTANDARDS•PREVENTINGHARMNewsConsumptionintheUK:2019Producedby:JigsawResearchFieldworkdates:November2018andMarch2019Published:24July20192KeyfindingsfromthereportWhileTVremainsthemost-usedplatformfornewsnowadaysbyUKadults,usagehasdecreasedsincelastyear(75%vs.79%in2018).Atthesametime,useofsocialmediafornewsusehasgoneup(49%vs.44%).UseofTVfornewsismuchmorelikelyamongthe65+agegroup(94%),whiletheinternetisthemost-usedplatformfornewsconsumptionamong16-24sandthosefromaminorityethnicbackground.FewerUKadultsuseBBCTVchannelsfornewscomparedtolastyear,whilemoreareusingsocialmediaplatforms.Aswasthecasein2018,BBCOneisthemost-usednewssourceamongalladults(58%),followedbyITV(40%)andFacebook(35%).However,severalBBCTVnewssources(BBCOne,BBCNewsChannelandBBCTwo)haveallseenadecreaseinusefornewscomparedto2018.Useofseveralsocialmediaplatformsfornewshaveincreasedsincelastyear(Twitter,WhatsApp,InstagramandSnapchat).ThereisevidencethatUKadultsareconsumingnewsmoreactivelyviasocialmedia.Forexample,thosewhoaccessnewssharedbynewsorganisations,trendingnewsornewsstoriesfromfriendsandfamilyorotherpeopletheyfollowviaFacebookorTwitteraremorelikelytomakecommentsonthenewpoststheyseecomparedtothepreviousyear.Whenratedbytheirusersonmeasuressuchasquality,accuracy,trustworthinessandimpartiality,magazinescontinuetoperformbetterthanothernewsplatforms,followedbyTV.Aswasthecasein2018,ratingstendtobelowerforthemajorityoftheattributesamongusersofsocialmediasites.3KeyfindingsfromthereportTVisthemostcommonplatformforaccessinginternationalandlocalnews,despiteadecreaseinusecomparedto2018.UsersofTVforinternationalandlocalnewstendtobehighlysatisfiedwiththequalityofthistypeofnewsoutputthattheplatformprovides.IntheNations,BBCOneremainsthemost-usedsourcefornewsinEngland,WalesandScotland;whilebothUTVandBBCaretopinNorthernIreland.Sixinten12-15yearoldsareinterestedinnews.Thesechildrenprimarilyengagewithnewstounderstandwhat’sgoingonaroundthemandtolearnaboutnewthings.Being'tooboring'isthekeyreasonf...
