J.Geogr.Sci.2023,33(3):639-654DOI:https://doi.org/10.1007/s11442-023-2099-5©2023SciencePressSpringer-VerlagHowtopromotethegreendevelopmentofurbanizationintheTibetanPlateau?FANGChuanglin1,21.InstituteofGeographicSciencesandNaturalResourcesResearch,CAS,Beijing100101,China;2.CollegeofResourcesandEnvironment,UniversityofChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100049,ChinaAbstract:UrbanizationoftheTibetanPlateauisapartofthestrategiestostrengthenChina’snationalsecurityshieldaswellastoenhanceitsnationalecologicalsafetybarrierandthe“watertower”ofAsia.Italsoplaysanirreplaceableroleinprotectingoneofthelastunspoiledregionsintheworld,ensuringthatthe“thirdpole”achievesmodernizationinstepwiththerestofChina,andimprovingthelivesofallethnicgroupsthatlivein“roofoftheworld.”Thisstudydiscussesindetailthedistinctivedrivers,developmentpath,developmentgoals,develop-mentdynamic,andgreendevelopmentmodelandstrategyofthenewtypeofurbanizationintheTibetanPlateau,whichdiffersmarkedlyfromtherestofChina.ThisauthorassertsthaturbanizationoftheTibetanPlateaushouldinvolvelow-intensitydevelopment,culturaltrans-mission,protectionoflandandborders,conservationofwaterresources,smallconcentra-tionsandwidedispersionofthepopulation,socialinclusivity,andimprovementstotheenvi-ronmentthatbenefitthepeople,drivenbydomesticinvestment,tourism,services,andpairedassistance.Theplansfortheregion’sfuturedevelopmentareasfollows.Intermsoftheprotectionoflandandborders,theTibetanPlateauwillsafeguardChina’snationalsecuritywithfastandstabledevelopmentandensuresufficientpopulationsinhabitborderandruralareas.By2035,thepermanentpopulationoftheplateauwillbe16million,andthelevelofurbanizationwillreach52.5%,withstabilityinthemiddlestageofurbanization,therebycomprehensivelyimprovingthequalityofurbanization.Intermsofgreendevelopment,itisnecessarytoimprovethequalityofecologicalproductsandthecapacityandlevelofecolog-icalservices,accentuatelocalfeaturesandfolkcustoms,promoteculture,andencouragepeopletotendlivestockinruralareasandliv...
