Designation:F1455−92(Reapproved2017)AnAmericanNationalStandardStandardGuideforSelectionofStructuralDetailsforShipConstruction1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF1455;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(´)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.INTRODUCTIONTheprincipalaimofthisguideistodepictrecommendedpracticesrelatedtothedesignofshipstructuraldetails.Theimportanceofstructuraldetailsisclear:(1)Theirlayoutandfabricationrepresentasizablefractionofhullconstructioncosts.(2)Detailsareoftenthesourceofcracksandotherfailureswhich,undercertaincircumstances,couldleadtoseriousdamagetotheshiphullgirder.(3)Thetrendtowarddecreasingshiphullscantlings(thatis,increasingaveragehullstresses)hasthepotentialofincreasingthedamagetodetails.(4)Researchershavelargelyneglectedtheanalysisofstructuraldetailsatleastinpartbecausetheconfigurationandpurposeofthesedetailsvarygreatlyandarenotcommonlydescribedordiscussedintheliterature.Duetolackofanalyticalandexperimentaleffortdevotedtostructuraldetails,theirdeterminationhasbeenleftuptodraftsmenanddesigners,withverylittleengineeringinput.Intwocomprehensivereviews2,3oftheperformanceofstructuraldetails,86shipsweresurveyed.Theseincludednavalandcommercialshiptypes.ThecommercialshipsincludedbothU.S.andforeignbuilt.Thevesselsrangedfrom428to847feetinlength,from18000to90000tonsindisplacement,andfromfivetotwenty-sixyearsinage.Thedetailsobtainedweregroupedinto12typicalfamilies.KnifeEdgeCrossings(FamilyNo.6)andStructuralDeckCutoutDetails(FamilyNo.9)areshownbutnotcoveredindetailinthisguide.Theremainingtendetailfamilieswerefurthercategorizedinto53groupscomprisingatotalof611detailconfigurations.Anumberoftheseconfigurationsareverysimilartoothersindetailgeometryandsuchduplicateshavebeenexcludedfromthisguide.Anumberofotherswereeliminatedbecauseofrelativelyinfrequentobserveduse....
