Format Healthcare Best Practices Guide describes the features and functions of the proposed, voluntary, and industry-wide use of the Portable Document Format(PDF)for the healthcare industry. As such, the guide is intended to be used as a reference tool for defining PDF as an electronic container by which healthcare information can be captured, exchanged, preserved, and protected for consumers, care providers, and other stakeholders within the healthcare delivery system. The guide does not describe a normative file format in the same manner as PDF/A.Instead the guide provides education on the use of PDF to support eXtensible Markup Language(XML)standards in the healthcare ecosystem and enable longer-term retention of PDF healthcare documents.Note:This document is not intended to address compliance with any applicable state and federal regulations that might apply to this information, including Public Law 104-191(1996),the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA).Information about PDF/A can be found at:http:/www.aiim.org/documents/standards/19005-1_FAQ.pdf The Implementation Guide for PDF Healthcare is published as a separate document by AIIM and
