Designation:D5201−05a(Reapproved2020)StandardPracticeforCalculatingFormulationPhysicalConstantsofPaintsandCoatings1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationD5201;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(´)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.1.Scope1.1Thispracticecoversprocedurescommonlyusedinthepaintindustrytoformulatepaintsandcoatingmaterials.Itdescribesproceduresforcalculatingformulationvaluesforweightsolids,volumesolids,solventcontent,volatileorganiccompound(VOC)content,hazardousairpollutant(HAP)content,anddensityofliquidpaintsandcoatings.Thesevaluesarecalculatedfrombasicformulationdata.Thesecalculationsmayberelatedtoeitheras-supplied(unreduced)oras-applied(reduced)coatingmaterials,includingmulticomponenttypes.1.2Thesecalculated,formulation-basedvaluesmayormaynotbeacceptableforVOCregulatorypurposes,dependingonthespecificwordingoftheapplicableregulation.Someregu-lationsrequireanalysisofthecoating.Somerulesallowtheuseofformulationdata,however,someadjustmentsmaybeneededtothevaluescalculatedinthispracticebeforetheyareusedforregulatorypurposes(see4.3).1.3Forpurposesofthispractice,itisassumedthatvolatilecomponentsevaporateandthematerialsthatremainareidentifiedascoatingsolids.Forexample,solventsarenormallyusedtoadjustviscosityforapplicationandappearanceofthecoating.Otherliquidmaterials,suchasplasticizers,reactivediluents,etc.,thatareexpectedtoberetainedinthedriedfilmtoaffectthefinalphysicalpropertiesshouldbeclassifiedaspartofthecoatingsolids.StandardssuchasTestMethodsD2369,D4758,D5403,andGuideD2832maybeusedtodeterminevolatileornonvolatilecontentofspecificcompo-nents.Forpurposesofthispracticeitisassumedthattheblendedformulationbehavesasanidealsolutionwithnovolumechangeonmixing(see6.2).1.4Volatileby-productsofcross-linkingreactions(curevolatiles)arenotconsideredinthesecalculationssincetheob...
