Designation:D537793(Reapproved 2021)Standard Classification forRubber Compounding MaterialsGround Coal1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5377;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This classification covers the compounding materialknown as ground coal.It is generally used in rubber com-pounds as a filler.1.2 There are three grades of ground coal based on particlesize, ash, and moisture. The selected values for these propertiesare suitable for use in a rubber compound.1.3 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C1070 Test Method for Determining Particle Size Distribu-tion Volatile Matter in the AnalysisSample of Coal and CokeD4371 Test Method for Determining the Washability Char-acteristics of Coal3.Significance and Use3.1 Ground coal is commonly used as an inexpensive fillerin rubber compounds as a direct or partial replacement forcarbon black or as a diluent in the compound.3.2 Ground coal is very compatible with most rubbers and isvery easily mixed into the compound.4.Basis of Classification4.1 Particle size will have a direct effect on the modulus, tensile strength, and tear strength of the finished rubber.4.2 Ash in the coal will effect the specific gravity and highash can influence the curing characteristics of the rubber.4.3 Moisture in the ground coal at levels of 0.5%and abovecan cause blisters and scorch.4.4 Lowering the density(specific gravity)will reducecompounding cost and affect volume loading.4.5 Ground coal for use in rubber compounds shall conformto the three grades listed in Table 1.5.Keywords5.1 filler;ground coal1This classification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D11 onRubber and Rubber-like Materials and is the direct responsibility of SubcommitteeD11.20 on Compounding Materials and Procedures.Current
