Designation:D6046−02(Reapproved2012)StandardClassificationofHydraulicFluidsforEnvironmentalImpact1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationD6046;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(´)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.1.Scope1.1Thisclassificationcoversallunusedfullyformulatedhydraulicfluidsintheiroriginalform.1.2ThisclassificationestablishescategoriesfortheimpactofhydraulicfluidsondifferentenvironmentalcompartmentsasshowninTable1.Fluidsareassigneddesignationswithinthesecategories;forexamplePwL,Pwe,andsoforth,basedonperformanceinspecifiedtests.1.3Inthecurrentversionofthisclassificationtheaspectsofenvironmentalimpactincludedareenvironmentalpersistenceofwhichbiodegradabilityisonecomponentandacuteecotox-icity.Althoughenvironmentalpersistenceisdiscussedfirst,thisclassificationdoesnotimplythatconsiderationsofenviron-mentalpersistenceshouldtakeprecedenceoverconcernsforecotoxicity.1.4Anotherimportantaspectofenvironmentalimpactisbioaccumulation.Thisaspectisnotaddressedinthepresentclassificationbecauseadequatetestmethodsdonotyetexisttomeasurebioaccumulationofhydraulicfluids.1.5Thepresentclassificationaddressesthefreshwaterandsoilenvironmentalcompartments.Atthistimemarineandanaerobicenvironmentalcompartmentsarenotincluded,al-thoughtheyarepertinentformanyusesofhydraulicfluids.Hydraulicfluidsareexpectedtohavenosignificantimpactontheatmosphere;thereforethatcompartmentisnotaddressed.1.6Thisclassificationaddressesreleasestotheenvironmentwhichareincidentaltotheuseofahydraulicfluid.Theclassificationisnotintendedtoaddressenvironmentalimpactinsituationsofmajor,accidentalrelease.Nothinginthisclassificationshouldbetakentorelievetheuseroftheresponsibilitytoproperlyuseanddisposeofhydraulicfluids.1.7Thisclassificationdoesnotcoveranyperformancepropertiesofahydraulicfluidwhichrelatetoitsperformanceinahydr...
