Designation:D8332−20StandardPracticeforCollectionofWaterSampleswithHigh,Medium,orLowSuspendedSolidsforIdentificationandQuantificationofMicroplasticParticlesandFibers1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationD8332;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(´)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.1.Scope1.1Thispracticeprovidesforthecollectionofwatersampleswithhigh,medium,orlowsuspendedsolidstodeterminethepresence,count,polymertype,andphysicalcharacteristicsofmicroplasticparticlesandfibers.Thiscollec-tionpracticehasbeenvalidatedforthecollectionofsamplesfromdrinkingwater,surfacewaters,wastewaterinfluentandeffluent(secondaryandtertiary),andmarinewaters.Thispracticeisnotlimitedtotheseparticularwatermatrices;however,theapplicabilityofthispracticetootheraqueousmatricesmustbedemonstrated.1.2Watersamplesarepassedthroughfiltersorsievesofadequatemeshsizetoenablecaptureofthesmallestdesiredparticlesize.Forwaterswithhighormediumsuspendedsolidscontent,aseriesofsieveswithincreasinglysmallermeshsizeshouldbeusedtopreventcloggingandallowforthecollectionofdesiredparticlesizefractions.1.3SubsequentsamplepreparationfollowedbyanalysisutilizingeitherPyrolysisgaschromatography/massspectrom-etry(Py-GC/MS),IRspectroscopy,orRamanspectroscopymaybeusedtoidentifythequantity(massornumbercount)andcomposition(polymertype)ofmicroplasticparticles/fibers.Thespectroscopicmethodscanprovideacountofthenumberofparticlesandfiberspresentinasample,andPy-GC/MScanprovidethemasspresentinasample.Whendesired,microplasticparticle/fibersize,shapeandsurfacecharacteristicscanbeascertainedwithappropriateinstrumentssuchasascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM).1.4Units—ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandardexceptwherestandardU.S.equipmentisspecifiedinimperialunits,forexample,inchesandgallons.Nootherunitsofmeasurementareincludedinthissta...
