Designation:E 1454 02Standard Guide forData Fields for Computerized Transfer of Digital UltrasonicExamination Data1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E 1454;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This guide provides a listing and description of the fieldsthat are recommended for inclusion in a digital ultrasonicexamination data base to facilitate the transfer of such data. This guide is prepared for use particularly with digital imagedata obtained from ultrasonic scanning systems. The fieldlisting includes those fields regarded as necessary for inclusionin the data base(as indicated by Footnote C in Table 1);thesefields,so marked, are regarded as the minimum informationnecessary for a transfer recipient to understand the data.Inaddition, other optional fields are listed as a remainder of thetypes of information that may be useful for additional under-standing of the data,or applicable to a limited number ofapplications.1.2 It is recognized that organizations may have in place aninternal format for the storage and retrieval of ultrasonicexamination data. This guide should not impede the use of suchformats since it is probable that the necessary fields are alreadyincluded in such internal data bases,or that the few additionscan be made. The numerical Field Number listing indicated inthis guide is only for convenience;the specific numbers carryno inherent significance and are not a part of the data file.1.3 The types of ultrasonic examination systems that appearuseful in relation to this guide include those described inPractices E 114,E 214 and E 1001.Many of the terms used aredefined in Terminology E 1316.The search unit parametersused in this guide follow from those used in Guide E 1065.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:E 114 Practice for Ultrasonic Pulse-Echo of Disconti-nuities by the Immersed Pulse-Echo Ultrasonic MethodUsing Longitudinal Waves2E 1065 Guide for Evaluating Characteristics of UltrasonicSearch Units2E 1316 Terminology for Nondestructive Examinations23.Significance and Use3.1 The primary use of this guide is to provide a standard-ized approach for the data file to be used for the transfer ofdigital ultrasonic data from one user to another where the twousers are working with dissimilar ultrasonic systems.Thisguide describes the contents, both required and optional, for anintermediate data file that can be created from the native formatof the ultrasonic system on which the data was collected andthat can be converted into the native format of the receivingultrasonic or data analysis system. The development of trans-lator software to accomplish these data format conversions isbeing addressed under a separate effort;this will includespecific items needed for the data transfer, for example, language used, memory requirements and intermediate speci-fication,including detailed data formats and structures.Thisguide will also be useful in the archival storage and retrieval ofultrasonic data as either a data format specifier or as a guide tothe data elements that should be included in the archival file.3.2 Although the recommended field listing includes morethan 120 items, only about one third of those are regarded asessential and marked with Footnote C in Table 1.Fields somarked must be addressed in the data base. The other recom-mended fields provide additional information that a user willfind helpful in understanding the ultrasonic examination result. These header field items will,in most cases, make up only avery small part of an ultrasonic examination file. The actualstream of ultrasonic data that make up the image will take upthe largest part of the data base.Since an ultrasonic image filewill normally be large, the concept of data compression will beconsidered in many cases.Compressed data should be noted,1This guide is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E07 on Nondestruc-tive Testing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee E07.11 on DigitalImaging and Communication in
